Anaesthetic inhaler, 1877. This is a Clover ether inhaler, designed by Dr. Joseph Clover (1825-1882), an English physician. The device has been cut open to show the internal parts. A face mask was attached to the left-hand tube, and a squeezable air bag to the right-angled tube. The dome-shaped reservoir (containing ether, a volatile anaesthetic liquid) was turned to gradually increase or decrease the percentage of the air that passed over the ether to the patient. Several inventors based new inhalers on this, while the original continued to be manufactured until the beginning of the Second World War.
