Kimberlite pipes are carrot-shaped volcanic pipes that rise 100 to 300km from the Earth's upper mantlet. Kimberlites occur when high-pressure eruptions of magma expand, breaking through rock as they ascend to the earth's surface. The extreme amount of pressure where kimberlites originate often creates diamonds, making kimberlites rich mining locations.
