Kyoto Imperial Palace was a palace where successive emperors lived and conducted their political affairs for over 500 years from the Nanbokucho period to the beginning of the Meiji period. It is currently open to the public as a facility managed by the Imperial Household Agency. Shishinden is the most prestigious palace in Kyoto, rebuilt in the architectural style of the Heian period. In front of it is a simple garden called ``South Garden'' where Ukon no Tachibana and Sakon no Sakura are arranged in the expanse of white sand. A garden for ceremonies is held at Shishinden.
