Demetrio Limachi, who built most of the reed boats used by Thor Heyerdahl at the Andean Eco Village,Lake Titicaca, Bolivia


Lake Titicaca is situated on the Bolivian and Peru border at the northern end of the Altiplano. At an altitude of 3810 metres above sea level it is the highest navigable lake in the world. The lake measures some 190 kilometre by 80 kilometres The area around the lake is the heartland of the Aymara. The Lake was also the centre of Inca religious beliefs and remains of the Incas civilisation can be seen on the Island of the Moon and Sun. Demetrio Limachi is one of four Aymara boatbuilders from the Lake Titicaca island of Suriqui who were enlisted by Dr. Thor Heyerdahl of Kon Tiki fame to build and crew the Ra II expedition, he works at the Andean Eco Village
