James Jeans (1877-1946). Jeans (1877-1946), English mathematician and physicist, held the chair of applied mathematics at Princeton university (1905-1909), lectured at both Oxford and Cambridge, and was engaged in research on astrophysics and cosmogony. In 1929 he turned to writing, producing a number of popular books on astrophysics and cosmology.
