Petrus Bertius (1565-1629), Flemish cartographer. Bertius was born at Beveren. As a young man he travelled widely before settling to study at the University of Amsterdam. He excelled in mathematics and on graduating was appointed professor. However his main interest was cartography. He published editions of Ptolemy's Geographia, also several miniature atlases of his own design. In 1618 he moved to Paris to take the position of cosmographer to King Louis XIII. This engraving comes from van Meurs' Illustris Academia Lugd-Batava, printed at Leiden in 1613.
