The vase paintings show that a large variety of shapesexisted during the sixth and fifth centuries. There are twomain types. On the earliest black-figured vases the halterappears as a nearly semicircular piece of metal or stone witha deep recess on the straight or lower side, which affords aconvenient grip. They are of lead about 8 inches long, affording acomfortable grip for the hand in the centre. One of the pairis damaged, the other weighs about 2 lbs. 5 oz. They are somewhat shorter and heavier (1610and 1*480 kg. respectively), and the recess is so narrowthat they can only have been held by the smaller end, andnot in the centre. Side by side with this club-like type we find in the fifthcentury another type consisting of an elongated, roughly 300 GREEK ATHLETIC SPORTS AND FESTIVALS CHAP. semispherical block of metal or stone, thi
