BODY CONSTRUCTION Careful consideration was given to the design of thebody to obtain wide aisles and wide seats, particularlyat the passengers hip line. The aisle width in the fin-ished car is 25 in. between end seat plates, but furthereffective aisle width was obtained by offsetting the seatbacks 2 in. While quite a study was being made to ob-tain the wide aisle, the mechanical department did notlose sight of wide, comfortable seats. These are 36V2in. over all, and this length was obtained by making. New Chicago Railways Car—General Side View During the construction of these cars in the ChicagoRailways shops, every item entering into them wascarefully weighed and the results from an average often cars appear on page 114. The underframes for the 100 cars built by the rail-way company, the fifty built by the Southern Car Com-pany and the fifty built by the American Car Companywere furnished by the American Bridge Companys Chi-cago plant. The designing of these underframes wasmade as simple as practicable, consistent with the de-sired strength, to reduce the cost of fabrication to aminimum. As noted in the previous description, theunderframe is of the side-girder type, with the girderplates forming the outside sheathing of the car feature of the design in the underframing differingfrom former cars is the method of fastening the kneebraces to the side girders. These braces are formedof reinforced channels swung from the bulkhead cross-sills and
