“Hudibras” 12, ‘Hudibras and the Skimmington’ engraved by English artist William Hogarth 1697-1764


The illustrations for Samuel Butler's epic poem 'Hudibras' are William Hogarth's first published set of original engravings. In this scene Hudibras mistakes a traditional parade celebrating nagging wives for a satanic gathering, it quickly turns into a food fight targeted at the erstwhile is a 19th Century version engraved by T. E. Nicholson from the original picture by Hogarth.
