Pneumothorax cross-section. Artwork of an axial cross-section through a human body at the level of the heart and lungs, showing a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) during chest surgery. This view looks up the body from below, and the pneumothorax (upper right) is in the left lung. The surgery has accessed the thorax and chest cavity by breaking apart the sternum (breastbone), with a metal retractor shown in place (upper centre). This is known as open-chest surgery. This cross-section is at about the level of the eighth thoracic vertebra (T8). The arms are at right and left, and the heart is at upper right. The right lung (left) is intact. The spine is at lower centre.
