The treaty with the Six Nations, made in 1790 atNewtown, was unsatisfactory and another conference wascalled at Painted Post, which was centrally located as regardsthe valley of the Susquehanna and its tributaries and theGenesee. A high red post which could be seen for milesmade the place particularly conspicuous and therefore desir-able as a meeting-place.
