COUPEVILLE, WHIDBY ISLAND Coupeville is one of the oldest settlements of Western Washington, and has many wonderfully productive ranches inland. products and fish make up the countys re-sources. Considerable of the timber, par-ticularly from Whidby Island, has been rt-moved, and wheat, oats, hay, potatoes, fruit,poultry, buttter, eggs, etc., are now shippedout to nearby markets, the towns on PugetSound. The soils in the northern part ofWhidby Island are of remarkable fertility,some of them producing as much as 100bushels of wheat per acre and immensecrops of potatoes. In season the waters ofthe county abound in salmon and other saltwater fish, and many of the citizens of thecounty find profitable employment in con-nection with the fishing industry. Coupevilleis a town of some 1,050 people and the coun-ty-seat, situated on a beautiful bay in thenorthern part of Whidby Island.
