Exterior of the Nowa Huta steelworks, near Cracow, Poland. Processes & plant at the works are technologically redundant; the steelworks is a replica of the Pittsburg plant built in the 1930's & itself out of date by World War II. Nowa Huta is Poland's largest industrial complex & its worst single polluter. Atmospheric pollution from oxides of nitrogen & sulphur contribute to the smog that envelops nearby Cracow for around 135 days each year.
