From thcHO facts wo arrive at two consequences. First, that tho growth of the young Salmon has been greatly overrated; and, secondly, that at a certain period of its life tho Salmon is a Parr. The extent to which tho growth of tho Salmon has been overrated, will bo per- ocived at once, when it is shown that Dr. Knox, in tho pap6r from which I have already quoted, states that tho fry which emerged from their capsules on tho 1st of April, wore taken, on tho 22d of tho same month, in the same year, as Smolts, with the fly, of the size of tho little finger. It was also generally bclioved tliat tho try of tho y« ar descended to the sea that very spring, and returned, in tho antumr., grilse, varying from two to seven pounds It is distinctly shown, however, by Mr. Shaw, that the ^ > mg Sal- mon, which is called a Pink while in tho state represe ti;d above, having perpendicular lateral bars or markings of .. v^isky gray col >â -, which were once supposed to be peculiar to the Pt -r, tioes not become a Smolt, or go down to the sea until tho second spring, tarrying a whole year in the fresh Ft f: f1 Smolt, one year uld. The fish here represented measured seven inches and a half in length, and three inches and one-eighth in circumference. Its gill-covers were silvery, marked with a dark spot; belly and sides, up to the lateral line of the same, silvery color ; back and sides, K I ; ',â.
