Hewas the tutor of Constantines son, and says the Emperorwas warned in a dream to make the celestial sio-n of Godupon the soldiers shields. He did so, and with the trans-verse letter X {chi) circumflecting the head of it, he marksChrist upon their shields {et transversa X literd sammocapita circiimjiexo Christum sciitisnotat). This provesclearly that the sign which Constantino thought he sawin a dream was the letter X (chi), the initial of Christand not the heathen cross. In the Roman Catacombsthere is a distinct allusion to this on a monument toSimj)honia and her sons at the head of which are thesewords, In hoc vinces*X.
