Fort Union National Monument rest stop along the Santa Fe Trail. Once the largest post in the southwest, Fort Union was established to control the Native American tribes of Jicarilla, Apache and Utes, protect the Santa Fe trail and it also served as a supply depot for other New Mexico forts. It was abandoned in 1891.
