The Peruvian Caballo de paso or Pacer horse going through it's routine at national event in Lima Peru South America photo 1970

The Caballo de Paso or Pacer horse is a legacy of the Spanish settlers to Peru during the colonial era over four centuries ago. They are now popular all over the world as show horses and comfortable riding mounts because of their graceful tripping gait and gentle temperament. The Peruvian Pasos are bred and nurtured on ranches in the area of Trujillo north of the country and also near the capital Lima. Breeding Pasos is also popular now in the USA,Canada and elswhere such is the fondness by horse lovers to own these animals. The annual spring fair in Trujillo held throughout the last week of September is a big event where the Pasos and their riders (Chalanes) go through their paces to the admiring crowds and again at the National show in Lima each year. The Peruvian Paso horse is recognised as part of the national heritage.
