The Nene, or Hawaiian Goose is a species of bird endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is the official state bird of Hawai'i.


The Nene or Hawaiian goose is the world's rarest goose. It lives wild on the islans of Maui, Kaua'i and Hawai'i. it is the official state bird of Hawai'i. they were once abundant on the islands but man and predators such as the introduced small Asian mongoose, feral cats and wild pigs have reduced their numbers. They breed well in captivity and have been reintroduced and protected. Today a further danger is the motor car. The nene can fly but is often reluctant to do so and becomes another traffic victim.
