Hydes com-pany, and located in Provo, in the I spent the winter among hostileIndians. In the winter of 1849-50 wehad a battle with the Indians, in whichJoseph Higbee was killed, and a num-ber wounded. In the spring peace wasmade, but there was much sufferingamong the people for want of food,wheat being worth $5 a bushel. In thespring of 1850 the present townsite ofProvo was surveyed and the people leftthe fort to build on their city lots. Wfesuffered much inconvenience from the. fact that the Indians opposed ourbuilding upon their lands or catchingtheir fish. Our little settlement waspresided over by Elder Isaac March, 1851, President BrighamYoung, Heber C. Kimball and otherscame to Provo to organize us into aWard, and on the 19th of that monththey called the Saints together andpreached to them. On that occasion Iwas called and sustained as Bishop, be-ing ordained a High Priest and Bishopby President Brigham Young. My coun-selors were Wm. Young and HarlowRedfield. I immediately commencedbuilding up the town, exploring thecountry, raising crops, etc. The winterof 1851-52 was a hard one in Provo, andour people suffered considerable, but 492 LATTER-DAY SAINT the Lord was merciful unto us, and pre-served our lives. In July, 1852, Presi-dent Brigham Young and three of theApostles came to Provo
