Liverwort gametophyte, fluorescence micrograph


Fluorescence micrograph of a liverwort (Calypogeia fissa) gametophore, consisting of a small stem with three rows of leaves. The two dorsal rows of leaves are one-lobed with small incisions, while the ventral row leaves are less conspicuous and a different shape. They are called amfigastria. Liverwort leaves have no midrib and are built of one layer of undifferentiated cells. Observed in ultraviolet (UV) light. Magnification: x65 when printed at 10 x 10 cm.
