Severalinstances, however, have come to our notice in which, under favorableconditions, a large amount of this decay (possibly as much as 75 percent) did develop. The fruit was picked and left out in a rain ofseveral days duration without protection. Under these conditions notonly a great amount of decay was to be detected when the fruit was. In these cases the picking boxbecomes also the storage box. Packing-House Infection.—The infection of fruit in the packinghouse is the chief injury done by the cottony rot fungus. The fruitis left in the curing tents or tight rooms from one to two months afterbeing washed, when the final sorting, grading and packing of the fruittakes plaee. During this time, especially on fruit unusually weak, thecottony rot has a favorable chance to develop.
