This improvement in making gas for light-ing depots, churches, colleges, hotels, resi-dences and villages, now on exhibition at thePair of the Mechanics Institute, in this city,is the greatest step towards simplification,that has ever been made in the business ofgas making. It has the merit of great sim-plicity in construction and management, andeconomy in the practical cost of above cut represents an apparatus suita-ble for depots, churches and residences. Itconsists of the stove A for generating thegas, the valve B. for preventing its returninto the furnace, and the gas holder C play-ing in the water tank D. The stove A isabout 26 inches in diameter and 3 feet contains a round retort, into which the alloy, is then dropped into its place, makingan air-tight joint, the water allowed to dropslowly and the process of generating gas be-gins at once.
