Blue sky view, towards Paradise Beach green hills, stilt root mangrove trees rising shallow seawater, Lauriston Point, Carriacou
At 34 square kilometres (13 square miles) and 16 mile long, Carriacou is the largest island of the Grenadines. The climate is tropical and the hilly terrain slopes to white beaches. There are no rivers and local residents rely on rainwater for their water supply. Hillsborough Beach is one of several beautiful beaches on the island, which is part of Grenada. Lauriston Point is an area of tropical mangrove swamp between Hillsborough and Paradise Beaches. Stilt roots elevate the plants above water and allow them to respire oxygen, while the lower roots are submerged in the inter-tidal beach sands. The plants are also able to 'pump' excess salt from their cells. Mangrove trees trap sediment in their root systems, keeping offshore waters clean and clear, to the benefit of offshore coral reefs.
