Boatbuilders harbour on Fraueninsel, Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany.

The Fraueninsel, or Lady’s Island, is the smaller of the two islands in Chiemsee. While the Herreninsel, or Gentleman’s Island, is largely unpopulated and aside from its castle has a largely unspoilt natural landscape, the Fraueninsel is dominated by a small fishing village. The spiritual centre and “soul” of the Fraueninsel is the Frauenchiemsee Monastery. It was founded in the 8th century and reestablished by King Ludwig I after secularization, and it is hard to imagine the Fraueninsel without it. Nowadays, it is used mostly for seminars. The Fraueninsel was ‘discovered’ in the 19th century by painters looking for inspiration in the countryside. The majority travelled from Munich and established a permanent art colony there. To this day the island is still a popular spot for painters and other artists.
