Aerial view of Stonehenge. Dating from about 2100BC, Stonehenge consists of large sandstone blocks and smaller bluestone pillars. The outer ring of lintelled stones has a diameter of 30 metres. Alignment of some of the stones with the midsummer sunrise and midwinter sunset suggests that Stonehenge was used as an observatory for seasonal festivals. Stonehenge is located on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, and is designated as a World Heritage Site.
