DNA analysis microchip. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of part of a microfluidic microchip, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) used during DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) analysis. Chemical reagents mix in the chamber (upper centre) of this silicon chip. The microchannels leaving the chamber at centre are 20 micrometres wide. MEMS include tiny robots (nanorobots), as well as miniature laboratories (\labs on a chip\") which can be used in sensors and diagnostic devices. In addition to their tiny size, MEMS are lightweight and can be made cheaply. This chip was made by the Cepheid Corporation, California, USA. Magnification: x149at 6x7cm size. x250 at 4x5 inch size."
