Culhane worked on early space-borne X-ray instruments, and went on to work on solar and cosmic X-ray astronomy (supernovae, galaxy clusters and active galaxies), including high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1985. From 1983 to 2003, Culhane was director of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) of University College London (UCL). His awards include the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society (2007). Photographed in 2008, at the MSSL, Holmbury St Mary, near Dorking, Surrey, UK.
