China: Empress Xiao An (-1596), consort of the 13th Ming Emperor Longqing (r. 1567-1572). Hanging scroll painting, 16th-17th century. Empress Chen, formally Empress Xiaoan, was the consort of the Longqing Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. She was his second empress, though she lost his favour in 1569 and was moved to a separate palace, apparently for criticising his indulgence in women and music. The emperor neglected her, refusing to give her proper care when she fell ill after the move. The crown prince and future Wanli Emperor was kind to her however, naming her Empress Dowager.
