Trading since 1736: the Quayside Sunday Market in the shadow of the arched Tyne Bridge linking Newcastle upon Tyne to Gateshead in Tyne and Wear, England, UK. This vintage monochrome image was shot in the year 1950.

Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England, UK: in the year 1950, customers mill around the stalls of Newcastle’s Quayside Sunday Market against the backdrop of the massive parabolic steel arch of the 1928 Tyne Bridge linking the city to Gateshead, and two more distant river crossings, the High Level Bridge opened as a rail crossing in 1849 and the Swing Bridge, opened in 1876. The Quayside Sunday Market was founded in 1936 and is still one of the city’s popular weekend attractions. This vintage monochrome photograph image comes from the collection of a Yorkshire family who travelled widely in northern England and in Scotland.
