Dr. Santa Clara's Arch (Tempre Gate), Elvas, Alentejo, Portugal

This is an example of the romantic architecture of the 19th century and was built by Dr. Santa Clara, a distinguished scholar of the period. The archway is called the Tempre Gate in memory of the battle between the Knights Templar and the Moors in which the wall was breached here. This is a legendary episode from this period and inspired the construction of the arch. What was probably the original gate of the first Arab walls can be seenthrough the wrought iron gates beside the arch.
