Wlien the mine closed three years later he entered the Scranton School of Mines, wherehe pursued a full mining course, including mine surveying, and when he finished his studiesin 1896 was employed by the Birwind-White Coal Company to open and equip two minesfor a capacity of two thousand tons per day. ^^^^en he had completed the first plant hewas asked to come to Burlington, North Dakota, and take charge of the companys mineat that place, and put in the equipment for mining machinery, cable, haulage and brick. Whenthat property was sold he opened a mine on his own account and continued the business tothe time of his death. He was forceful and resourceful, was familiar with every phase ofmining operation through practical experience and scientific study and so directed his effortsthat each step in his business career was a forward one.
