Deoxygenated blood enters the heart from the body via the vena cava (purple, upper centre left) and is pumped to the lungs via the pulmonary artery (purple, upper centre right). The oxygenated blood returns to the left side of the heart (right) and is pumped around the body via the aorta (red, upper centre). The ECG trace shows the electrical activity of the heart.
