Manatees congregate in the warmer water of the head springs of the Crystal River

During the winter months, the endangered Florida manatee move down the Crystal River and other Florida rivers to congregate in the warmer waters of the head springs. Manatees are unable to survive in water temperatures much below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. These Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are shown in the Three Sisters Springs area, a wildlife sanctuary and natural inlet on the east side of Kings Bay.
