This Grade II listed building has a datestone with the inscription F T I 1669 above the right-hand front door. Originally there was an oak panel with date of 1659 and initials T K S over the left-hand front door, this related to Thomas Sandes (founder of Sandes Hospital in Highgate, Kendal) and Katherine, his wife. Presumably, this was their home. The panel shown, with the name 'GRANDY NOOK', is on the north-facing wall of the building. Grandy Nook used to be the Woolpack Inn. Shown on maps dating from 1614, the building was known as Grandy Nook Hall prior to it’s rebuilding in 1669, from which date it was known as Sandes Hall. The building is now converted into six apartments and is administered by the Grandy Nook Trust, a Quaker organisation.
