This Order is divided into Butterflies and Moths; theButterflies are distinguishable by their horns being almostinvariably thin and long, ending in a knob (see fig. p. 389); alsoby their light and elegant shape, and beautiful colouring. Theymostly fly by day, and when at rest carry their wings Lobster Moth [Staiiropus fagi), male. The Moths are distinguishable by the horns never beingclub-shaped, but generally thread-like or with side branches;and they commonly rest with their wings expanded, and areof a heavier make and more sluggish in flight than theButterflies; also, though not exclusively evening or night-fliers,many of them are so. The family of the Clearwing Moths {Sesiida) is verypeculiar, and differs from the other Lepidoptera in the wingsbeing more or less transparent or clear, and icithout scales ; but from other characteristics resembling those ofthis Order it has been placed in it.
