Illustration of Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD), Roman naturalist and author (right), with the Roman Emperor Vespasian (9-79 AD, seated at left). Pliny wrote the 37-volume encyclopaedia Historia Naturalis. The work was based on two thousand books by nearly five hundred authors and covered zoology, botany, geography and astronomy. Pliny dedicated it to Vespasian's son Titus. Engraving from Vies des Savants Illustres (1866).
