View SSE of St Michael de Rupe (of the Rock) church crowning the eroded summit of Brentor extinct volcanic cone W of Dartmoor, Devon.

View SSE of St Michael de Rupe (of the Rock) church crowning the eroded summit of the extinct volcanic cone of Brentor on the W edge of the Dartmoor National Park. Established around 1130 by Robert Giffard (possibly in fulfilment of a vow made to St Michael) it is mainly C13th with a largely C15th tower. The church affords wide views over Dartmoor to the E, Plymouth Sound & Whitsand Bay to the S, the Cornish hills to the W, the heights of Exmoor 40 miles to the N. The summit (1,100ft above sea level) is surrounded by the earthworks of an Iron Age fort. In the Middle Ages a three-day Michaelmas fair was held on the hill on the vigil, feast (29 September) & morrow of the Archangel.
