Loch Eishort & Boreraig deserted settlement, Strath Swordale (Strath Shuardale), Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK: a township of c 120 people in 22 households forcibly cleared for sheep in 1853 by agents of Lord MacDonald. The most substantial remains are those of the house & steading built for the tenant sheep farmer which was abandoned in 1919. Almost half of the original inhabitants emigrated to Australia, many dying of fever on the ships. Some settled on crofts in other villages but experienced extreme hardship. Owned by the Scottish Government, this fertile glen is still used to run a hefted flock of c 300 breeding ewes.
