International House Garden was designedt by acclaimed landscape architect Ogawa Jihei in 1929 for a mansion that occupied the property prior to the construction of International House. The land was originally the property of feudal lords of the Marugame domain in present day Kagawa Prefecture during the Edo Period. The projection of the building above the pond was modeled after a motif which can be seen in scroll paintings of the Heian Period while the house garden, designed by the seventh-generation famed Kyoto landscape artist Ogawa Jihei - also known as Ueji - charms people with its calm ambience. International House of Japan is a foundation that was set up to promote international cultural exchange. The original funding for the construction of the building that houses it was put up by the Rockefeller Foundation.
