Since the use of the rr-rays has become general, observations of thisinjury have accumulated, but without entirely removing the possibleconfusion of it with fracture of the neck close to the head. Severalauthors believe it to be the cause of most, perhaps all, of the observedcases of coxa vara.^ It certainly is frequent enough to make it im-portant to bear its possible presence in mind in the examination ofinjuries of the region in the young, if they are accompanied by pain, more or less disability, and limitation of motion, especially in abduc- FiG. Notwithstanding the lack of control of theproximal fragment, forcible correction by abduction and inward rota-tion (Sprengel, Ztthlatt. fur Chir,, 1909, p. 1745) has yielded some sat-isfactory results. The line of fracture follows ordinarily the junction of theneck and shaft quite closely—that is, it coincides with the spiral line infront and the intertrochanteric line behind as they pass between thegreat and lesser trochanters.
