The Tompkins Square Park riot occurred on January 13, 1874 in the East Village, Manhattan. The New York City Police Department clashed with thousands of unemployed workers who were petitioning for help from the government. North America and Europe were in an economic depression, the Panic of 1873, which lasted for several years and was known as the Great Depression until the 1930s set a new low standard for financial hardship.
