Rheumatoid arthritis. Coloured X-ray of the finger of a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The finger held up shows abnormal swellings of the bone at each knuckle joint. Instead of a clear healthy space between each joint, the bone and cartilage shows erosion and compaction, also with bony outgrowths. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most severe joint disease which occurs when the body's immune system attacks joint tissue, most often in the hands and feet. The inflamed and painful joints have limited movement. There is no cure for this disease. Drugs may relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, or check the progress of the disease. Physiotherapy can reduce bone deformity.
