Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, (1906). From the original painting by Jean-Marc Nattier, in the Versailles Museum, France. Peter (1672-1725) became Tsar in 1682. He embarked on a campaign to modernise and Europeanise Russia, socially, economically and militarily, and develop her into a maritime power.
