GRANADA, Nicaragua — The Cathedral of Granada, with its distinctive yellow and white exterior, dominates the skyline at Parque Central. There has been a church on this spot since about 1525, but it was destroyed and rebuilt several times in the following centuries as the city of Granada was attacked by pirates and others. Construction on the current version began in 1888 but was not fully completed until 1972. With its distinctive yellow with white trim exterior, it stands over Parque Central in the heart of Granada, Nicaragua.
Photograph by David Coleman. The Cathedral of Granada, a striking yellow and white Neoclassical structure, stands as the centerpiece of Granada's Parque Central, embodying the city's rich history and resilience. Its current form, completed in 1972, is the culmination of a construction process that began in 1888, replacing earlier churches that stood on this site since 1525. The cathedral's history mirrors that of Granada itself, with previous structures falling victim to pirate raids and conflicts that plagued the city over centuries. Notable among these was the destruction by American filibuster William Walker in 1856. Architecturally, the cathedral blends Neoclassical design with elements of colonial style. Its distinctive facade, painted in vibrant yellow with white trim, creates a striking contrast against the blue Nicaraguan sky. Twin bell towers flank the main entrance, while a central dome crowns the structure. Inside, the cathedral houses important religious artworks and serves as the spiritual heart of Granada. Its prominent location in Parque Central makes it a focal point for both religious observances and community gatherings.
