The past, present & future of the Yale University School of Medicine and affiliated clinical institutions : including the New Haven Hospital, the New Haven Dispensary, the Connecticut Training School for Nurses . rvice building, but the advantages of a cen-tral position for the ambulatory clinic are soobvious that the central plot has been reservedfor such a clinic. In order to build a servicebuilding properly connected with the maincorridor of the Hospital, it will be necessaryto turn the operating suite on its axle, and ex-tend the corridor to meet the service the private ward and the service build-ing have been completed, and there is no ob-stacle to the construction of these buildingson the selected plots, there will no longer beneed for the old North Ward, and in thisposition it is proposed to build (b) A modern Dispensary with an entrancefrom Howard Avenue for patients, reservingthe entrance to the Administration Buildingon Cedar Street for physicians. The erectionof a service building will also necessitate thedestruction of the greater portion of the Con-gress Avenue wing of the Brady LaboratoryAnnex, and it is proposed to erect (c) A laboratory (as indicated on Diagram 46. Ill), opposite the West Ward, for the Sur-gical Sections of the Hospital, comparable tothe laboratory opposite Gifford Ward, alreadyerected for the Sections on Medicine andPediatrics. (d) The old South Ward should be re-modeled and extended to meet the main cor-ridor at a point opposite the operating suite. (e) A modern Pediatric clinic is planned atthe west end of the main corridor. (f) The Gifford Wards should be rehabili-tated just as the East and West are beingchanged now. In order that these improvements can beaccomplished, it is necessary to move thepower house. With this in view the powerplant, for the new Sterling Hall of Medi-cine, is designed on a unit system, so thatit can be expanded to provide light and heat for both the Hospital and the Medi-cal School.
