Being a very free flowerer, and of low growth, it is well adapted for orna-menting the flower beds or borders. The authority for the specific name is Mr. Gay, as stated in the fourth indexof the St. Petersburgh Garden; but of what country it is a native we areunable to say. The etymology of the generic name Linaria, is given in vol. i. page 50 ; thespecific name delphinoides, alludes to the resemblance of the flowers to those 101 UMBILICUS SEMPERVIVUM. {Sempervivum-like Navelwort.)LINNEAN SYSTEM. ^ NATURAL ORDER. DECANDRIA PENTAGYNIA. CRASSULACE^E.—(Decand.) GENERIC CHARACTER. Umbilicus. (Dec.) Calyx 5-partitus. Corolla gamopetala cairspanulata 5-fida, lobis ovatisacutis erectis tubi circiter longitudine. Stamina 10 corollas inserta. Squamce 5 obtusse. Car-pella 5 apice attenuata, stylis subulatis.—Herbce Europse australis aut orientis indigense. Foliarosulata aut alterna integerrima aut subdentata. Flores albidi aut flavi, ramosi nec cymosi. Calyx 5-parted. Corolla gamopetalous, campauulate, 5-cleft, with ovate, acute, erect lobesabout the length of the tube. Stamens 10 inserted into the corolla. Scales 5, obtuse. Carpels5 attenuated at the apex, with awl-shaped styles.—Herbs natives of southern or eastern arranged in a rose-like manner, or alternate, very entire or somewhat toothed. Flowerswhitish, or yellow, branched, not cymose. SPE
