When large enough the plants should be transplanted into cold frames, and as early as the ground is in fit condition they should be planted in the garden, in rows about two feet apart and about IS inches in the row. The late varieties should be sown about the first of May. and set out in the garden in June and July. As these grow larger than the early va- rieties, they should be planted in rows about three feet apart and about two feet in the row. During the grow^ing season, even in hot-beds various leaf-eating in- sects are likely to attack the plants, de- stroying many if uninterfered with. They may be controlled by applications of a weak mixture of arsenate of lead until the heads have developed to about two-thirds of their normal size, after -which a less poisonous insecticide should be applied, such as Hellebore, Bug-Death or Slug Shot Prompt and continuous application will insure a good crop. 1 ok. to 4,(MM) plants, 4 oz. of Seed in beds to transplant upon an acre. ~ FIRST EARLY SORTS.
