Skin. Artwork showing a section of human skin. A hair (brown) can be seen poking through the epidermis (pink/red), from the follicle, or pit that holds it. Halfway down the follicle on the right is a sebaceous gland (white) which produces oily sebum. Also within the dermis is a coiled sweat gland (mauve), along with sensory nerves (green) and blood vessels (red and blue). Fat deposits (yellow) are found in a subcutaneous layer below the dermis. Skin forms a vital barrier between the body's internal organs and the environment. This sensory organ also plays an important role in maintaining a constant body temperature.
