Guyton de Morveau (1737-1816). 1867 illustration of the French chemist, lawyer and politician Louis-Bernard Guyton, Baron de Morveau. In 1782, Guyton de Morveau proposed a practical system of chemical nomenclature. In collaboration with Lavoisier, Fourcroy and Berthollet the system was refined and has become the foundation of modern chemical nomenclature. He also worked on the Encyclopedie Methodique (which was published between 1782 and 1832). Outside of science, he was involved with the French governments before during and after the French Revolutions. In 1794, he was involved with the newly formed balloon corps, and he himself flew a balloon during a battle. He became director of the Ecole Polytechniqe in 1795.
