His Majesty was born on April 20, 1839, son of the late Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was elected Lord of Roumania on April 20 () 1866, and entered Bucharest on the 22nd of the following month. On March 26, 1881, he was proclaimed King of Roumania°.
